Cotan Still Life (Permuted Tricolor Series) (portable series)
2021
acrylic on canvas over wood
10 x 8 inches

The source image, in Black & White at center of the painting is a wonderful Still Life by Juan Sanchez Cotan, from the Art Institute of Chicago collection. The painting has inspired me since I encountered it in the mid 1908s. I have frequently posted a reproduction of it in several studios over a few decades. This is its first perseverance in my trompe l'oiel work. The ground features colors from the 'permuted tricolor' series, but the edge handling of yellow to orange is experimental. In 2021, this was acquired to a private collection in California.
