LOOK!
2017
acrylic on canvas
30 x 24 inches
I have referred to looking from works dating back to the 1990s. In the 2010s, I encountered surviving examples on crosswalks in Brooklyn, where "LOOK!" had been a street/pedestrian safety effort in the Mayor Michael Bloomberg era. Subsequent mayor Bill Deblasio did his best to erase as much evidence of Bloomberg's administration, including this LOOK! safety campaign; Deblasio having mandated the re-paving in crosswalks to rid the city of these graphics.
I took this photo, wanting to bring a viewing-mandated subject/text back into my work.
In 2018, this painting was acquired to a private collection.
