tangible (virtual)
2021 (begun 2020)
acrylic on canvas over wood
5-3/4 x 8 inches

this is a reworking of the initial work which had the 'Virtual' note, alone. Not satisfied with it, I returned and added the elements; blue-painted tape, white tape (marked 'tape') and paper strip with my initial 'w'. This is part of what I'm playfully calling my 'transatlantic series' -referring to Mondian and paintings begun elsewhere (e.g. Europe, for Piet) and completed elsewhere (NY for Piet. 2021 Gowanus, Brooklyn for me)

Chisako (Joel Rosen). 2017 to 2021 permuted tricolor ground version
2021 (ground from 2013)
acrylic on canvas board
8 x 6 inches

with the 2021 passing of my old friend Ken Aiken (Joel Rosen) I returned to his drawing which I first quoted in a 1991 painting, "Essay: Joel Rosen". the ground dates from 2017 and was a test for a composition idea; I reclaimed the dormant study as a completed work of art in painting in this trompe l'oeil after a photocopy of an ink drawing by Joel Rosen (the drawing dates to the later 1980s)

Matisse's Window (Earth Touching Shakyamuni)
2020-2021
acrylic on wood
7-3/8" x 5-1/4"

This is a variation of a Tricolor, as a test/study; the gound with the extended yellow border alludes to the 'Earth-Touching Shakyamini" sculpture form in Buddhist Art. The panel was prepared in 2008 and an earlier composition (a test) that was rejected, thus allowing this to be re-worked and considered among the '2021 transatlantics' - re-working, often out of scale or out of established formal elements. The image is of the Window in Nice of Matisse's home.

the Joel Rosen drawing (Chisako) - black ground from the 1990s
1994 to 2021
acrylic and tape on canvas upon plywood
5-3/8 x 3-1/2 inches

with the 2021 passing of my old friend Ken Aiken (Joel Rosen) I returned to his drawing which I first quoted in a 1991 painting, "Essay: Joel Rosen". The ground was a test of materials that I have had from at least 1994 - the torn wedge of white tape is a small length of white artists tape, now well bonded on the surface; all further bonded under acrylic varnish.

This is part of what I'm playfully calling my 'transatlantic series' -referring to Mondian and paintings begun elsewhere (e.g. Europe, for Piet) and completed elsewhere (NY for Piet. 2021 Gowanus, Brooklyn for me)

triptych (raw umber, ivory black, titanium white) pictures: with Jeweled Peach tape, with Dave Richards blue tape, with Baby Chick yellow tape
2021 (1996 to 2021)
acrylic on wood
each 5-3/4 x 7 inches. shown approx 20 x 7 inches

One of what I'm calling 'transatlantic' works. These three are from a group of 4 panels left unfinished in 1996. I revived them in 2021, completing the trompe l'oeil texts. The color tape is entirely a 2021 superimposition. While the white paper fields are' banged up and stained', I prefer some traces of the duration of their 'waiting-to-be-completed'.
